Berbuka Puasa / Breaking Fast at Hyatt Regency Kinabalu

The Hyatt Regency Kinabalu kindly invited SabahBah over to break fast with them and hosted us at their elaborate Ramadan buffet spread at the Tanjung Ria Cafe.

Of course, we didn’t have enough stomach space to sample everything on offer, but their Ramadan buffet runs all through the month, so we can always go back and try.

The holy month of Ramadan is a time of reflection for Muslims the world over.

Abstaining from food and water, as well as carnal desires and general sinful behaviour from sun rise to sunset; it’s all part of the holy month.

For our Muslim friends their spiritual rewards are multiplied and Buka Puasa, the time after sunset when the fast is broken (at 18:35 in Sabah, to be exact), is time to feast on delicious food, which benefits Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

For the Buka Puasa feast time, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu has prepared an elaborate buffet spread of more than 200 items at Tanjung Ria Café.

A Feasts for the Eyes and Stomach

The traditional fast-breaking fare take centre stage, and is backed up by a chorus of international favourites.

It wouldn’t be a Hyatt Regency Kinabalu buffet however, if it didn’t feature their famous, signature oxtail assam pedas.

Tucked away in the corner is the very popular naan and tandoori live station, where you’ll find Chef Govind working his naan-magic over the tandoori oven.

Of course, no berbuka puasa is complete without satay (meat skewers), ketupat (pressed rice), lemang (bamboo-cooked coconut rice), curries and an assortment of sambals.  Find it alongside ketam goreng mamak (Makak-style fried crab), daging rendang tok tulang rawan (beef rendang) and many other Malay specialities.

If, come dessert time, you still have space, the dessert counter will fill you up good.

Hyatt’s speciality dessert chef covers two counters with row upon row of delicious sweetness.  Anything that you might pick up, even if you don’t know what it is, is a perfectly sweet fullstop at the end of your buffet.

The Hyatt Regency Kinabalu’s extensive Ramadan spread is a worthwhile RM98 per adult or, 20:00, only RM 88.  Prices exclude service charge and tax (+16%).
