Big Apple Donuts now have two branches in KK, so trying their range of donuts seem virtually unavoidable.
But if you’re watching your diet and you want to choose from their menu of 22 donuts (plus some random ones not on the menu), the ones that you like best without having to mow through all 22, then do read on.
Sabahbah.com has done the dirty work for you and have tried virtually all the donut flavours at Big Apple Donuts, so we can give you the skinny on what’s what on the Big Apple Donuts menu.
It was an arduous task, but it just goes to show to what lengths we will go to bring you information on Kota Kinabalu that you can use.
Sabahbah.com is proud to present the biggest and most comprehensive guide on the Internet to Big Apple Donuts & Coffee’s donut flavours:
Big Apple Donuts, unlike their competitors, make a very light and fluffy donut ring. It’s both delicious and dangerous at the same time, because it’s very easy to gobble up a dozen donuts all by yourself in no time at all.
Hot Berry
Essentially it’s Semi Glazed with a strawberry-flavoured, jelly-filled centre as opposed to the usual hole. As is the other jellies in the series, the centre filling is overly sweet on purpose, so intended to compliment the subdued taste of the ring. Another remark of the concentrated fillings in the centre is that because they are concentrated, they tend to lean towards the artificial tasting side. But if you’re a child of the modern era, flavouring is nothing new to you, and if you’re a strawberry fan, the Hot Berry might be right up your alley.
Duren Duren
Flavoured for the King of Fruits, Duren Duren is a durian-flavoured donut. Durian is a spiky, foul-smelling fruit and is a much sought-after in South East Asia. To the palate of westerners, the fruit itself is sometimes too foreign to enjoy, but those who love durian, do so passionately, and in season, they disappear as quickly as this donut does.
Chocoring
Chocoring is a basic donut, smothered in chocolate, which is neither too rich or too sweet, and provides a very palatable taste. In a stable of donut toppings, which can be very rich and sweet, the Chocoring produces a taste that could easily complement a coffee or tea, or stand perfectly on it’s own as a sweet, but not overly so, midday treat.
Cool Blue
For our tastes, the blue berry jelly in the centre of this standard Cool Blue donut, is both a bit too sweet and bit too artificial. In general the jellies are meant to accompany the rather plain outside part of the donut, and as such tend to be a little more concentrated than the toppings which covers the entire donut. If, however, like us at sabahbah.com, you have a big mouth, you tend to get more than the intended amount of jelly per bite. Perhaps this is why the jelly tends to be overly sweet. If you’re a blueberry fan though, you might find solace in Cool Blue.
Kiwi Blitz
As the name suggests, this is a Kiwi-flavoured donut. The ring of the donut is covered with white icing and the donut hole is filled with a kiwi-flavoured jelly. The jelly is also quite sweet, so to get the best tasting donut, make sure a bit of jelly is included with every bite. The jelly features kiwi seeds, so at least a small percentage of real kiwi must have been used in the flavouring.
Semi Glacier
Unsurprisingly, Semi Glacier is a variation on Glacier. What makes this semi, are the thin drizzles of icing sugar atop a base of a standard Glacier donut. If your sweet tooth craves something a little more than the Glacier donut, but not quite as much as the donuts with the intense toppings, then Semi Glacier will hit the bull’s eye on your pallet.
