Borneo Headhunters Hat 2019 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Every year, except 2017 as it was, the Borneo Headhunters Hat Ultimate Tournament attracts players from around the region, and beyond, to Kota Kinabalu. A “hat” is an Ultimate Frisbee tournament format in which players are assigned to newly formed teams that battle for the championship.

Ultimate, probably more famously known as Frisbee, is played in Sabah since 2007, but has its roots in the USA, where it originated in the 1970′s.

A basic game of Ultimate involves 2 teams squaring off on a field similar in size to a football field. Each team aims to gain possession of the disc, advance it to the opponents’ end zone by throwing it from player to player, and score a point for catching it there. First team to reach x amount of points, or have most points when game-time runs out, wins. Easy right?

The winning number of points can very depending on tournament variables. Full WFDF Tournament games run to 17, but in smaller tournaments the number of playing fields vs. how many teams you have will determine the length of games.

The basic rules of Ultimate are, no moving after gaining possession of the disc (you can pivot on one foot though), there should be no contact, and – the rule that (is supposed to) rule them all – always uphold The Spirit of The Game. It’s touted as the essence of Ultimate and, in a nutshell, means playing competitively, while championing sportsmanship above all else.

The Borneo Headhunters Hat 2019 with the theme Crazy Rich Asians is set to continue the epic series of tournaments started in 2010 on 9 & 10 March 2019.
