Lok Kawi Ramadan Bazaar

Description

The Lok Kawi Ramadan Bazaar appears every year during Ramadan and is a well known for selling buka puasa food from all over Malaysia.

This particular Ramadan bazaar is located at the Lok Kawi Army Camp where staff and their families from all over Malaysia are stationed.

That’s why people from in and around Kota Kinabalu know to head to the Lok Kawi Ramadan Bazaar for the best dishes from Kelantan, Johor, Penang and the other parts of west Malaysia.

Buka puasa, or the breaking of fast, takes place just after sunset, which is at around 18:30.

Muslims will be sure to visit the market to buy food with enough time to spare to get back home and prepare for the meal and prayers, which precedes the breaking-of-fast.

The stall owners usually start to gather from around 14:00 to prepare the various food they will offer and people from all walks of life, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, will arrive shortly after to pick and choose (and sometimes queue for) their favourites.

A popular dish to look out for is nasi kerabu, a blue-rice dish with spicy undertones and fragrant flavours.

Nasi ayam pinyit is another crowd favourite, with several stalls, each making their own variation, vying for customers with clever and funny chants that give the market a distinct, vibrant sound.

Murtabak, a kind of savoury pancake with different types of meat or vegetable fillings is also to found at various stalls.

The Lok Kawi Ramadan Bazaar is, like many other Ramadan bazaars, filled with colourful food and drinks and is certainly worth the effort to get to.

Over weekends getting there early is highly advised, as from 15:30 onwards the traffic slows to a crawl through nearby Putatan, approaching the market where people slow down to look for the closest possible parking spot.

A taxi from Kota Kinabalu city to the market will cost around RM30 or RM40 depending on the state of traffic and can take around 30 minutes.
