  • Bali Bali Gardens is clearly visible from Jalan Mat Salleh where it is softly lit, except where its name is trumpeted in bright, neon lights.

The entrance, however, is on the other side of the venue in Lorong Bunga Telur, accessible from the turn-in just before the traffic lights as you head from the mosque towards Tanjung Aru.

Bali Bali Gardens, as the name suggests, brings a slice of Bali’s famed gardens to Kota Kinabalu.

The restaurant is in a converted, recently-renovated house, with distinct Balinese features, such as the cement and red-brick detail on the walls, the water features and the open-air areas dotted around the sizable yard.

The Balinese music, subdued lighting and the general atmosphere transforms you to Bali, and it’s quite possible to pretend to not be in KK anymore, in spite of being near the sometimes busy Jalan Matt Salleh.

The menu is Indonesian, which offers dishes not very different from Malaysian favourites, albeit under different names and with slightly different styling.

Bali Bali Gardens’ food items start from as little as RM3.50 for Roti Jala or Popia Goring, and the most expensive dish currently on the menu is Ikan Bakar Bumbu Bali at RM18.

They offer beer by the bottle at RM9 each, as well as a generous menu of red and white wines, starting from around RM78 per bottle, or from RM38 for a small, 2-glass bottle.

There is a pavilion in the garden, where Bali Bali Gardens plans to have cultural performances in future.

The opening times of this venue needs to be verified.

    1. This place has the potential as they've done it up quite nicely.

My comment is on the portioning. I had the Nasi Goreng with Satay Lilit. Rice portion was acceptable, but the sides (urap, tempe, tauhu goreng) were extremely pitiful. Practically and literally, just one little piece of each or one pinch.

Hope they can improve on that and on the service as well, as they charge a 10% service charge.

    2. I've been there twice in a week and I really enjoy eating Nasi Goreng with Satay Lilit. I would come there again with my family next week. It is advisable to book first to avoid disappointment because I had experience once.
BALI BALI GARDEN, HERE WE COME..

      • That's good to hear. They had a very shaky start, but if your experience was really that good, then it seems like things are better now.

    3. Was there a couple of times, and both times, the service and food weren't great. As I was there quite late, the rice was chewy, dry and hard – and it was explained to me by the waiteress that it was due to the repeated heating to keep the rice warm! The portion of everything else was pitiful and the entire set up of the place is haphazard. The food is not very balinese either. Don't think I will be back in a hurry if at all. Hope they will improve with time for their sake..
