More about Ultimate Frisbee
Ultimate Frisbee has been part of Sabah, Borneo’s landscape since the first demo game in Sep 2007. It is played 3 times a week in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu.
Consisting of players that have been involved for different lengths of time, the skill and experience varies greatly. Player experience include Malaysian Ultimate Open, the Singapore Ultimate Open, Bangkok Hat, Manila Spirits and a few further afield.
The Headhunters, one of the known local teams, hosts an annual tournament, the Borneo Headhunters Hat, which in 2015 became a 2-day tournament for the first time in its 6-year history.
There are 3 pick-up sessions per week.
Sundays are the more serious pick-up days, played at the rugby field next to Kota Kinabalu International Airport’s Terminal 2 in Tanjung Aru. It’s most often from around 3:30pm – 6pm and cleats are recommended as the field is mostly grass with sandy patches.
During the week, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm – 8pm, casual pick-up games of Ultimate are played on the beach not far from the field, at Tanjung Aru’s First Beach. Although played barefoot on sand, it’s not beach Ultimate as such. Tanjung Aru’s beach is usually hard, compact sand, which means the games are reasonably fast. The size of the field depends on the tide and the number of players that show up.
