Description
Pesta Rumbia (Sago Festival) takes place in Kuala Penyu on 2 – 3 July 2016.
If you’re out in Kuala Penyu this November, don’t miss the opportunity to get your fill of the sago palm, an economically important crop of Sabah.
The Sago Festival is a tourism highlight for the usually sleepy town of Kuala Penyu, otherwise known as a departure point for those heading out to Pulau Tiga.
During Pesta Rumbia, the local term for Sago Festival, the many uses of the rumbia will be exploited for a festival involving fun, games and, of course, food centred around the veristile carbohydrate.
But if you need one reason to travel the distance for the Pesta Rumbia, let it be sago worms.
A local delicacy, the sago worms themselves are pretty versitile and appear on pizzas, as fried snacks and yes, if you’re brave enough, alive. Enjoying a live sago worm is as easy as grabbing the little grub at the head and chomping it off just behind. The gooey goodness will repeat on you all day long in a way second only to durian.
And no need to feel bad for the bugs – they’re pests that grow into large, red beetles that destroy the sago palms, so see eating them is a very environmental friendly form of pest control.
If high protein insects is not your thing, try something equally gooey, but somewhat more palatable: ambuyat.
Kuala Penyu is about 3-hours from Kota Kinabalu and can be reached via the long distances buses parked between the High Court and Horizon Hotel on Jalan Pantai in Kota Kinabalu. The journey should cost less than RM15 one way.
