Proboscis Monkeys & Fireflies River Cruise

(1 customer review)

Your Proboscis Monkeys & Fireflies River Cruise tour starts at 2pm with the journey from Kota Kinabalu to mangrove forests near Kota Belud, about 2 hours away.

The Proboscis Monkeys & Fireflies River Cruise is the ideal opportunity to experience Sabah’s jungle wildlife in one of Borneo’s beautiful wetlands, not too far from Kota Kinabalu.

From the quaint little village of Tamau near Kota Belud, the Proboscis Monkeys & Fireflies River cruise sails along the Tempasuk river. It’s here where you’ll have the chance to see Sabah’s unique wildlife, one of the celebrities being the Proboscis Monkey with its distinctively large, protruding nose.

Other mangrove wildlife that you might spot are cheeky, long-tailed macaques, river otters, a variety of birds including the brightly coloured kingfisher, and plenty more surprises. Village panoramas and snippets of local life along the river banks will fascinate you equally.

The second part of the Proboscis Monkeys & Fireflies River Cruise, the part with all the fireflies, is on the Nanamun river, firefly country.

Reaching it after nightfall, you’ll be amazed when thousands of fireflies emerge from the darkness to create the “Christmas Tree” effect that brightens up the otherwise black, mangrove forest.

A half day tour, the Proboscis Monkeys & Fireflies River Cruise ends back in Kota Kinabalu city, at around 9pm.

Well organised, comfortable bus and knowledgable guide. Bring binoculars if you want to see the monkeys in detail as they are smaller than I thought. The stars were nearly more amazing than the fireflies. Good experience.
